lol, I is full of smart! (warning: rant ahead)

Thu Nov 19, 2009, 11:13 PM
So I was on wikipedia reading up on the entry on 'Self actualization' [link] ya know, like the highest peice on Maslow's hierarchy of needs. Self actualization in simple terms is being all that you can be; reaching full personal potential.

Here is the quote that interested me:
" . . . two more phases an individual must progress through before self actualization can take place. These include "the cognitive needs", where a person will desire knowledge and an understanding of the world around them, and "the aesthetic needs" which include a need for :bulletblue:"symmetry, order, and beauty".:bulletblue: Once all these needs have been satisfied, the final stage of Maslow's hierarchy—self actualization—can take place."

Naturally, I thought of the character of Death the Kid. (Don't judge me!!)
And a great thought came to me that prompted me to become suddenly very impressed with the subtlety of Atsushi Okubo. Course I am already awed by Mr. Okubo's fine fine SE art, but STILL.

Since Kid's needs for 'symmetry, order and beauty' remain unsatisfied he has not acheived self-actualization. Which makes loads of sense when you think about it. Because THINK about what he has to live up to. No wonder he is a neurotic wreak most of the time. Since Maslow's hierarchy of needs is visually represented as a pyramid, I immediately thought of Kid's prologue chapter/episode. In the end, despite his ferocious efforts to create symmetry and retrieve all the souls necessary for Liz and Patty to become death sythes, a shinigami's ultimate weapon, the pyramid of Anubis crumbles to the ground.

I couldn't help but think of Kid's mission as a metaphor for his striving for self-actualization, the pyramid, a visual of the goal, and the destruction of the pyramid, Kid's failure.

Then I thought, 'so there really was some real depth to the introduction of Kid if you look at it in a different way.'

I also thought, 'I'm really tired and full of coffee, aren't I?'

:iconjungshan:
Jungshan is an undiscovered artist who combines Asian and Western techniques in her digital art made to look like real ink. I cannot believe she is not raging popular here on dA. Her dynamic compositons and her highly varied use of photoshop ink bowls me over. In addition, her figures have such penetrating but quiet emotion in their eyes and in the angle of their jaws. Such spirit! Check her out, you'll be happy you did.

Bad art is more tragically beautiful than good art 'cause it documents human failure.
